Cry Havoc opens with a teenaged girl arriving at a private school in decline, she’s enrolled herself to escape a terrible situation back home. Rebecca Wait creates MAJOR atmosphere to dial up the tension in this remote countryside setting where the teachers still insist on running drills just in case Russia nukes them. And the new teacher’s a man. Plus, there’s the usual teenage girl drama and an actual school play. Then a mysterious illness begins ravaging the girls. Basically, it’s a lot, and Wait explains how these ideas fermented through a writing process equally chaotic (spoiler alert: she’s NOT a plotter!). We dish about the similarities between nuclear bomb drills and active shooter/lockdown drills, how challenging the teen years can be, and, of course, mean girls.
